What is Physical Activity?Physical activity is defined as "bodily movement produced by the contraction of skeletal muscles that increases energy expenditure above the basal level". Physical activity can occur in the realm of occupational, household, leisure time, recreation or transportation activities. Exercise is physical activity that is planned, structured, repetitive, and purposeful for improving or maintaining one of more components of physical fitness. Physical fitness components include cardio-respiratory (aerobic) endurance, muscular endurance and strength, speed, flexibility, agility, balance, reaction time and body composition. Incident physical activity occurs in the context of work, leisure, transportation or other routine aspects of daily life. Most physical activity is incidental and occurs not with physical fitness as the goal.
