Walkable Neighborhoods for Seniors

The California Center for Physical Activity's Walkable Neighborhoods for Seniors project convenes local coalitions comprised of residents, community leaders and local government officials to address community walkability for older adults. The coalitions identify and then pursue environmental and policy solutions that will improve pedestrian safety and make it easier for older adults to walk in their communities.

In addition to conducting community workshops that train older adults, agency representatives and policy makers on how to make their community more walkable, the Center's local projects have started walking groups for older adults.

Currently, this project is active in Sacramento, Oakland and the Boyle Heights neighborhood of Los Angeles. For more information on Walkable Neighborhoods for Seniors, email cacenterforpa@cdph.ca.gov.

"Our Walkable Neighborhoods for Seniors project developed a pedestrian improvement plan for the predominantly Latino neighborhood of Boyle Heights in southeast Los Angeles. It's very comprehensive and involved a lot of research... It's amazing what can be accomplished with seed money from the California Center for Physical Activity."
